HELP US BEAD CANCER

Our volunteers are a big part of why can do what we do.  We appreciate them more than they know.

How it all works:

at Texas Children's Hospital, Houston Outpatient Cancer Center: We go once a month (usually the first Monday of the Month) for two hours (10am - 12pm). We call these events "Beading Parties" because they kind of are. We walk in and set up in the play room with a big table, spread out the bead boxes and the kids sit down around it. Our volunteers go out and ask kids if they want to come and create with us. When the kids come in, volunteers welcome them in, make them feel comfortable, and help them get their creative juices flowing. Some volunteers might ask "what's your favorite color?" or "how are you doing today?" We help them pick out what beads they want and make sure they know how to string the beads and if need be, do it for them. Within an hour there are kids all around the table and on the outskirts making beautiful necklaces and/or bracelets and it feels like a "Beading Party."  As a volunteer your job is to help the kids bead and get creative and make them as comfortable as possible.  Every volunteer and every child gets an orange Tshirt that says "i'm beading cancer."

at MD Anderson Outpatient Cancer Center, Houston: We go once a week (usually on a Tuesday) for two hours (10am - 12pm). Two volunteers go together and sit with one child at a time (while he gets his cancer treatment) and help them create a bracelet and/or a necklace.  You can stay with that one child the whole time, or you can move on to another room and sit with another child and let them create a beautiful necklace too.  Every child that you see gets our Orange "i am beading cancer" Tshirt.  As a volunteer you should be wearing your own Orange "i am beading cancer" Tshirt before you reach the hospital.
